Communication Style Self-Reflection Exercise

Purpose:
To build self-awareness around your personal communication style and develop strategies to enhance its effectiveness in different environments.

Steps in the Exercise:

  1. Define Your Style:
    • On a blank sheet of paper, write your communication style at the top.
    • Consider the environment (work, family, social) when defining your style (e.g., direct, reflective, gregarious).
  2. List Positives and Negatives:
    • Draw a line down the middle of the page.
    • On the left, list the strengths or benefits of your style—how others respond positively.
    • On the right, list the drawbacks or challenges—how your style might be misinterpreted or cause discomfort.
  3. Identify Growth Areas:
    • Choose 2–3 positives you want to enhance further.
    • Choose 2–3 negatives you want to reduce or manage better.
  4. Action & Adjustment:
    • Pick one specific trait to focus on for the week.
    • Consider how you can improve that trait through observation, listening, asking more questions, or adapting to others’ responses.
  5. Repeat Weekly:
  • Tweak one element each week—aim for small (1%) improvements.
  • Over time, these changes lead to meaningful growth in communication skills.

Core Message:
Your style matters—but communication isn’t just about you. It’s about adapting and connecting meaningfully with others in your environment.
